sunday

today is sunday, and the first poppy of spring exploded in the garden.  it's gorgeous, and about the size of my hand.  every year the first poppy gives me a swelling heart.  they are so beautiful with their wispy paper-like petals, eye-popping color, and furry leaves.  i have been told that if you cut them to bring them inside that you have to burn the stem to make them last.  but i can never bring myself to remove them from the garden.  i don't think a vase could possibly do them justice.

in the same bed with the poppies, the iris are also in full glory.  behind the iris you can see the pink dianthus and the yellow ice plant putting on their springtime show.  

a bit further on, the shrub rose is also blooming.  this one is called "morden sunrise", a great one to grow in colorado.  it blooms from spring to summer, and always looks happy despite the harsh mile high sun and the dry climate.  

i am having a super great sunday, because of the flowers, but also because i was so fortunate to see so many friends at our opening last night.  it was also nice to meet the new faces in attendance.  a big thank you to everyone who came, and also to jo cole at the curtis center for making the show possible.

i have spent the last couple of days dropping off work and placing my pieces in good spots for hanging at the curtis arts and humanities center.  here are a couple of shots of the curtis center, which is a renovated circa 1914 schoolhouse.  In 1931 it was expanded to a two-room schoolhouse, then the structure was moved to its current site on the northwest corner of orchard rd. and university blvd. in 1990. The building re-opened its doors to the community in 1992.  it is truly a beautiful space, and the grounds are also really stunning.  teresa and i are very lucky to have the opportunity to show our work in this gorgeous venue.

we hope you can come by for the reception on saturday evening fro 5:30-7:00pm!!

i will say that it's pretty cool to drive by and see our names in print!

father time

"father time" is officially finished.  another in the series using boxes covered with vintage paint-by-numbers!  materials include old clock parts, old washers, ephemera, a nail tin, and a 50's era wooden cut out of the perfect guy!  behind him are pages from an insurance policy.  

if i'm doing my math right, that means i have13 assemblage boxes, and 29 framed prints for my show in may.  phew!!  i think i'm gonna try and finish one more box, and then be done.  work has to be delivered on may 1st, so i'll have a few days to rest.  oh, i take that back.  i think i will only take one day, and then will begin that monumental push in printmaking for the arts festival in july!!

i can't complain.  it's nice to be working toward such nice goals.

mother nature, finished!

ok, so i only lasted 6 hours or so of glue drying before i put the new box together.  i get like that sometimes.  i know that the full 24 hours is optimum, but since there are screws securing the found pieces along with the glue, i figured it would be ok.  i get so excited about finishing the work, that i just have to do it, glue dried or not.

in my last post i talked about the paint-by-numbers, and as you can see, the box is completely covered with them.  i cut each piece to fit and then glued and clamped them in place with painter's tape.  then i sanded the edges to get them to line up perfectly.  finally, i sealed the old paintings with a coat of matt medium for strength and a nice surface.  

the box can sit on a surface or ledge, or can hang with the wire installed on the back.  this piece will be one of the boxes at the juxtaposition show at the curtis center in may.

i really like this one.  if it doesn't sell at the show, i think it may have to go in my permanent collection!!

i'm having a dual show in may with teresa brooks at the curtis arts & humanities center in greenwood village, colorado.  the center is a really wonderful venue.  the gallery was created from an old one-room school house.  at the back of the original building, another large gallery space was added.  teresa's porcelain work will fill the front room, while my assemblage boxes and prints will fill the back.  we would love for you and your friends to stop by for the opening reception on may 5th from 5:30-8:30 pm.

junk

i have been on some junking trips lately.  and i have found some good fodder.  some of these things were real bargains, and some i had to pay the price for cool.  the good news is that i am honing in on some ideas for a new series of boxes.  i think (duh) they are going to involve drawers somehow.  i don't know if i will do a box within a box, or just let the drawer be the box on its own.

some great news today.  i went to the curtis arts and humanities center in greenwood village with teresa.  we met with the gallery director there about a show.  turns out that teresa and i will have a dual show in may.  the center was originally a one-room school house back in the day.  there are two rooms on the main floor of the building.  teresa will have one room, and i will have another.  i will be showing assemblage, teresa pottery.  how exciting!!

it's a bit overwhelming, really.  so much to think about.  i know the time will fly, and the next thing i know, it will be may.  so i better start getting the ideas rolling.  and assembled!
